UMMA is on the front lines of health research, health advocacy, interfaith cooperation and education for the health professionals of tomorrow.

We offer high-quality health care to the many in need, but our crucial work involves more than medicine:
  • UMMA was one of just four select groups invited by the White House to help shape First Lady Michelle Obama's Let’s Move! program, a national initiative targeting childhood obesity.
  • UMMA is an important training ground for new doctors. At our clinic, medical students and residents from local medical schools obtain hands-on experience in an urban healthcare environment, preparing them for future practice.
  • UMMA representatives testified before the U.S. Congress during hearings on health care reform. This was the first time that a Muslim-American health care institution was asked to weigh in on one of crucial issues of our time: the need to ensure universal access to affordable health care for all.
  • UMMA partnered with the UCLA School of Public Health in leading-edge research concerning breast health among Muslim women — including cultural barriers to care. There is a dearth of health data available on Muslim Americans, and UMMA is dedicated to making a difference. “As a leader in the Muslim healthcare community,” says Yasser Aman, president of UMMA, “we can ask questions that no other organization is positioned to ask.”
  • UMMA partners with other faith-based organizations in working towards our mission. For example, UMMA coordinated a health fair in December 2010 at the 68th Street Elementary School in South Los Angeles, in conjunction with The Church of Latter Day Saints. At the fair, Mormon and Muslim youth worked together to assist students and distribute health supplies, discovering their faiths’ common belief in service to others.
In addition, UMMA has been recognized for its years of service by the U.S. House of Representatives, through a statement delivered by Congresswoman Maxine Waters, who noted that UMMA’s “efforts are making an invaluable contribution by healing countless people who have been relegated to society’s margins.”
